Excellent research and teaching

TH OWL research award and teaching award go to inIT professors

This year, Professor Carsten Röcker was awarded the Research Prize and Professor Stefan Heiss the Teaching Prize.

Each year, the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences normally honors people at its annual reception who have contributed to the university and society in a special way. Although the annual reception could not take place as planned this year due to the Corona pandemic, the award winners selected by the jury were not to be deprived of their merit and were presented online.

The Institute for Industrial Information Technology (inIT) had two reasons to celebrate: Both the deputy director of the institute, Professor Carsten Röcker, and board member Professor Stefan Heiss were honored.

Professor Carsten Röcker was virtually presented with the Research Award 2020. It is important to him to put users at the center of the design and development of technical systems, because his area of research is the interaction between humans and machines. His research makes an outstanding contribution to the development of TH OWL and its positioning in the high-tech region of OWL. "Personally, it has always been extremely important to me to be able to make a difference with my work. And to make a difference, you also need more than just one person. Applied research only works if you have motivated colleagues and work on topics together with companies. That's why I'm very pleased to receive this award and would like to thank everyone who made this success possible," Röcker said happily.

The 2020 teaching award went to Professor Heiss. This prize is a special award for digital teaching and Professor Heiss has managed to bring the subject of mathematics closer to his students through the creative and clever use of various digital tools. Among other things, the students were able to deepen and check their knowledge in virtual small groups and tests. For this reason, students gave him top marks for his virtual courses. "At the beginning of the last semester, I was particularly concerned to offer the students as much normality as possible during these unusual times. Of course, I am extremely pleased that the students appreciated my courses so much," says Heiss.

The entire inIT faculty congratulates Mr. Röcker and Mr. Heiss on these successes.
