Opening of the Fraunhofer Industrial Cyber Security Lab for Production Systems

Fraunhofer IOSB-INA and the inIT of the OWL University of Applied Sciences have opened now the Fraunhofer Laboratory for Industrial IT Security. More than 100 guests from business and politics came to the opening ceremony to convince themself about the know-how, the technical equipment and the training program to secure machines and plants in the future. Among them the Parliamentary State Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research Thomas Rachel and the President of the Fraunhofer Society Prof. Dr. Reimund Neugebauer.

The Fraunhofer Industrial Cyber Security Lab is a world-class environment where Fraunhofer together with the inIT develops and tests new cyber security solutions to defend industrial control systems (ICS) and critical infrastructure from cyber attacks.

Why more IT security? The use of the Internet for the networking of machines and equipment opens up wide possibilities for manufacturing companies and equipment manufacturers, but also for possibilities for manipulation and data theft. At present, attacks on critical infrastructures and industrial plants are increasing - sometimes these are serious threats which can cause considerable environmental damage and personal injury. According to the german association BITKOM, data theft, espionage and sabotage generate an annual loss of more than 22 billion euros for German industry.
