Experience research, discover new technologies and take a glimpse into the future: A total of 24 students from Städtisches Gymnasium Barntrup and their exchange guests from Brussels recently had a special visit on their agenda. As part of the European Erasmus+ exchange programme, the international group explored Innovation Campus Lemgo, stopping at various locations to gain insights into current research topics related to digital health.
Digital Technologies for Healthcare
One of the stops took the students to inIT. Dr. Laura Moradbakhti began by introducing the institute and its main research areas. She provided insights into the field of health informatics, highlighting how digital technologies can support people in everyday life, make health information more accessible and contribute to better healthcare.
The visit then became more hands-on: Patrick Gaudl, a research associate in the Discrete Systems research group, presented a Parkinson's app currently being developed in cooperation with Klinikum Lippe. The app aims to support people living with Parkinson's disease by documenting medication intake through a digital medication schedule. An integrated chatbot can also answer questions about Parkinson's disease using validated sources. Following the presentation, the students had the opportunity to try out the app themselves.
"We want to show young people just how diverse research can be and how digital technologies can make a real contribution to society. Health informatics is a great example of how technological developments can create tangible benefits for people," explains Dr. Laura Moradbakhti.
Hands-on Research and Hot Chocolate from a Robot
Another technological highlight awaited the students at the end of their visit: CinITo, the robot barista, served freshly prepared hot chocolate and impressed the group. The relaxed atmosphere also provided an opportunity to ask questions and engage in informal discussions with the researchers.
The visit combined insights into scientific research with international exchange. As a certified European School, Städtisches Gymnasium Barntrup regularly participates in Erasmus+ projects that bring together young people from different European countries and promote learning across borders.
