inIT will present research on AI-powered network automation at NOMS 2026

International Conference on AI and Network Management in Rome

inIT was represented at the IEEE/IFIP Network Operations and Management Symposium (NOMS 2026) in Rome. Research associate Steffen Fricke from the Computer Networks Research Group, led by Prof. Dr. Jürgen Jasperneite, attended the international conference on behalf of the institute.

NOMS 2026 was held under the theme “AI for Management and Management for AI” and brought together researchers and industry representatives from various countries to discuss current developments in the fields of network management, communication systems, and AI-supported automation. The conference program included workshops, technical sessions, panel discussions, tutorials, poster sessions, and demonstrations of current research results.

Research on AI-powered real-time communication

As part of the workshop “MFI5.0 2026 – 7th Workshop on Management for Industry 5.0,” Steffen Fricke presented the full paper “LLMs for Network Engineering Automation: State of the Art and Research Directions.”

The paper provides an overview of current developments and research trends regarding the use of large language models in the field of network engineering. The focus is particularly on possibilities for automating complex configuration and management tasks in industrial communication networks.

Fricke’s doctoral research also addresses the use of AI in the field of real-time communication. The goal of his research is to develop an AI-supported copilot for the automatic configuration of convergent real-time communication systems.

Discussions on Current Developments in AI and Networks

In addition to the scientific presentations, the conference offered numerous opportunities for professional exchange with international researchers. In particular, the discussions on AI-driven network automation and future communication infrastructures opened up new perspectives on current research topics.

For Steffen Fricke, this was also his first international conference. “I found the varied formats and the intensive exchange with international researchers particularly exciting. It became clear just how dynamically the field of research surrounding AI and network engineering is currently developing and what an important role international networking plays in research,” he summarizes.

Another special highlight was the social dinner at Terrazza Caffarelli, held in perfect weather and featuring an impressive view of the city of Rome.
