At the end of August 13 Students from three departments of OWL University of Applied Sciences will travel to Nevada, USA. For the “Burning Man” Festival the art object “Desert Eyes” which is four meters high was built. They are the only German team that has received an invitation and seed capital worth $10,000. inIT Professor Carsten Röcker supervises the team in the field of Interaction Design and User Experience. Professor Hans Sachs (Dep. 1 Architecture and Interior Design), Professor Christoph Althaus (Dep. 2 Media Production) and Professor Carsten Röcker (Dep. 5 Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences) are supervising the project.

Röcker: “One of the key challenges of this project is to prepare the exhibit for its use in the desert without testing it beforehand under realistic conditions. This includes e.g. power supply or thermal loading of components. Students benefit from the interdisciplinary approach of the project – they are working in multidisciplinary projects in international teams and can gain professional experiences for their career start. Furthermore, the project is an ideal opportunity for the OWL University to present ideas and competencies to an international audience.”

Ricarda Jacobi from Campusagentur Detmold, a so called virtual company, coordinates the project. The virtual companies are methods for career guidance. One goal of the Campusagentur is to make teaching more practice-oriented, offering cross-faculty projects and strengthening self-responsibility and goal orientation of the students.

“Burning Man” is one of the world’s most known festivals and famous for its fanciful and bizarre art objects and the burning of a human statue, the “Burning Man” on the sixth festival day. From 27. August to 4. September 70,000 people are expected – among them the students of OWL University.
