Around 250 guests from the university, politics, business and society accepted the invitation from the Technische Hochschule OWL to attend the traditional annual reception on 1 October 2026. In the Auditorium Maximum on the Innovation Campus Lemgo, the university looked back on the past year whilst also looking ahead – and honoured individuals who have made outstanding contributions to research, teaching and the university community.

Teaching Award for Prof. Dr. Markus Lange-Hegermann

This year, Prof. Dr. Markus Lange-Hegermann was awarded the Teaching Prize. “STEM is like sport. You don’t get better by watching others train.” This philosophy shapes Prof. Dr. Markus Lange-Hegermann’s teaching. The professor, who heads the “Mathematics and Data Sciences” research group at inIT, emphasises diverse learning pathways, continuous feedback and the active participation of his students. For him, interdisciplinary work is a natural part of this approach. For example, during the 2025 transfer year, students from three departments jointly developed a walk-through neural network. The jury particularly commended the combination of interdisciplinary learning, individual learning pathways and genuine student involvement. The laudatory speech was delivered by Vice-President Prof. Dr. Yvonne-Christin Knepper-Bartel.

Teaching thrives on relationships

In his acceptance speech, Prof. Dr. Markus Lange-Hegermann emphasised that his teaching is not the work of one person but a team effort, and thanked his research group, fellow professors and the Executive Board for their support. It is particularly important to Prof. Dr. Lange-Hegermann to see the person behind every student. He emphasised: “I learn from our students: they are diverse in their backgrounds, educational paths and life circumstances, and in the way they live and love. I am delighted that they not only embrace diversity but also defend it for one another. We can learn a thing or two from that.”

We at inIT are delighted and would like to congratulate Prof. Dr. Markus Lange-Hegermann on this special honour!
