Sustainable AI systems

Million euro funding for network with inIT representation

The SAIL network is concerned with sustainable artificial intelligence.

Since its foundation in 2006, the Institute Industrial IT (inIT) at the OWL University of Applied Sciences and Arts has acquired third-party funding amounting to more than 40 million euros. Over 160 bilateral and publicly funded research projects have already been successfully carried out. And now the next confirmed funding for an exciting research project can be announced:

Together with the University of Bielefeld, the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences and the University of Paderborn, the scientists of TH OWL are working on the project "SAIL - SustAInable Life-cycle of Intelligent Socio-Technical Systems". SAIL deepens existing cooperation structures in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and develops them further with the aim of making them permanent in the long term. SAIL addresses the next stage of AI development by looking at the entire life cycle of AI systems and their technological and societal impact. The interdisciplinary research program brings together researchers from the fields of AI, engineering, and the social sciences and humanities.

This makes SAIL one of five outstanding research networks in pioneering research fields that are receiving a total of around 81.2 million euros in funding from the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. The aim of the funding program is to sustainably strengthen existing topic-related and cross-location research networks of universities, universities of applied sciences and non-university research institutions, to expand them and to increase their visibility and international competitiveness.
