inIT strongly represented at ODS-conference in San Francisco

The Optical Document Security Conference (ODS) is the world’s most important forum for the testing and security of documents, like banknotes. About 250 participants from 24 nations met in San Francisco in the middle of February to exchange information and thoughts in the field of optical document security. Professor Volker Lohweg from Institute Industrial IT of OWL University participated in the conference.

ODS is, together with its predecessor “SPIE” (The International Society for Optics and Photonics”) the oldest conference of optical document security in the field of science and technology. As in previous years, inIT was actively involved in the conference and with four conference contributions strongly represented. Therewith, inIT presented most paper in the context of banknote security.

Professor Lohweg presented the latest research findings of the project Sound-of-Cash at ODS. “The again and again demanded elimination of cash money for the benefit of electronical cash systems is revealing itself as an illusion”, says Lohweg. The recognized expert in the field of document security and banknote authentication knows about the increasing importance of special image processing and pattern recognition procedures that are used for the machine processing of counterfeit money. The in the projects Sound-of-Intaglio and Sound-of-Cash developed procedures are also suitable for other fields of image processing, like for example in the medical field or material security.

inIT researches from the working group “Discrete Systems” conduct research in this important field for ten years. Further topics of research are: production and quality assurance of banknotes, authentication, wear and the safety at ATMs.

Professor Lohweg is pleased with the appreciation of the research activities that he gets to know at the conference. At the conference he also gave a speech about the topic “Data Collection Unit – A Plattform for Printing Process Authentication”.
