Artificial Intelligence in Automation

inITial: Initialprojekt NRW Innovationszentrum Industrial IT − Höhere Produktivität durch den modellbasierten Entwurf und Betrieb von komplexen Automatisierungssystemen

Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Oliver Niggemann
01.01.2010 bis 31.12.2012

The industrial automation is crucial for innovations in mechanical engineering and construction. Germany is still leading technologically in this particular area. Industrial associations agree with the fact that future innovations in mechanical engineering and construction will be generated by information technologies – areas in which the United States are dominating. The use and adaptation of information technology for industrial tasks is one of the objectives of the interdisciplinary field of industrial information technology.

Mechanical engineering is a key sector in Ostwestfalen-Lippe’s industry. In addition, there are plenty local companies for automation technologies. Hence several companies and universities teamed up and are going to develop industrial information technologies in cooperation with the Institute Industrial IT (inIT) on the campus of the University of Applied Sciences Ostwestfalen-Lippe in Lemgo.

In the inITial project, the partners are going to address a key challenge in automation technology: The optimization of construction and operation of complex distributed plants using modern information technology methods; e.g. by early tests of the automation systems and by a system wide diagnosis.
