On 5 November 2024, the Institute Industrial IT (inIT) at the Technische Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe (TH OWL) hosted the 9th Annual Colloquium on Image Processing in Automation - BVAu 2024 at SmartFactoryOWL. The colloquium served to highlight the latest aspects of computer vision. Participants gained interesting insights into the practice and future of industrial image processing.
Insights into practice through ten specialist presentations
A total of ten presentations in three thematically structured sessions highlighted important topics in image processing. The first session focused on AI-based anomaly detection and demonstrated the use of Artificial Intelligence to detect unexpected patterns in industrial processes. The second session highlighted innovative automation techniques that increase the efficiency and precision of automation processes through computer vision. The third session was dedicated to advanced methods of 3D reconstruction that open up new possibilities for quality control and production monitoring.
Conference proceedings of the annual colloquium
On 15 July 2025, the conference proceedings featuring the best contributions have been published as an open-access book entitled Image Processing in Automation. Selected Contributions from the BVAu 2024 Annual Colloquium by Springer Nature. The editor is Prof. Dr. Volker Lohweg, who also acted as conference chair for BVAu 2024. He emphasises: "I am delighted that we were once again able to organise such a high-calibre specialist conference. The high technical standard of the presentations is reflected in the quality of the selected conference contributions now published by Springer Nature."
Practical relevance as a constant
The aim of the biennial BVAu is to present emerging trends, research findings and application-oriented results. The BVAu thus provides a forum for discussion between industry and science. Prof. Dr. Volker Lohweg once again sees this goal fulfilled, as the conference proceedings convey the latest research results in the field of industrial image processing and present current application examples in a practical and impressive manner. He emphasises: "The conference proceedings contain clear application examples from the field of automation and place the results in a direct application context."
Partner colloquiums BVAu and KommA
There are also conference proceedings for the partner colloquium Communication in Automation – KommA 2024, which followed the BVAu 2024 on 6 November 2024, entitled Communication in Automation: Contributions from the KommA 2024 Annual Colloquium, edited by Jürgen Jasperneite and Ulrich Jumar. The BVAu will take place again in Lemgo in 2026, while the KommA will be held by inIT in cooperation with ifak e.V. in Magdeburg from 11 to 12 November 2025.
