First research visit lays foundation for further cooperation

Visit by guest doctoral student from AGH Krakow to inIT

Dominik Latoń, a doctoral student at AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow, recently spent a week conducting research at the Institute Industrial IT (inIT) at Technische Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe (TH OWL). The aim of the visit was to network with experts and further develop his research project in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and building automation.

Research in the field of energy efficiency and air quality

Dominik Latoń is a third-year doctoral student at AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow. His research focuses on the use of AI and machine learning to improve energy efficiency in building automation. During his stay at inIT, he developed a model for predicting indoor particulate matter (PM10) pollution based on outdoor sensor data and indoor humidity. He also prepared material for a review paper on the use of AI to predict air quality.

He also gained comprehensive insight into the TwinAir research project, which is being worked on at inIT in the Technologies of Digital Transformation working group led by Prof. Dr. Lukasz Wisniewski. TwinAir aims to improve indoor air quality and thus addresses similar issues to Dominik Latoń's research – one of many thematic interfaces that offer potential for future collaboration.

Enthusiasm for the Innovation Campus Lemgo

In addition to his scientific work, Dominik Latoń also used his stay to get to know the region – for example, on a trip to the royal seat of Detmold. He was particularly impressed by the open atmosphere at the Innovation Campus Lemgo. The modern infrastructure, the close networking between the university, research institutions and industry, and the uncomplicated exchange with teachers and researchers made his stay particularly rewarding:

‘The modern facilities on campus and the close integration of science and practice create ideal conditions for application-oriented research. The exchange with colleagues was very open and enriching.’

Cooperation with prospects

The visit came about on the initiative of Prof. Dr. Lukasz Wisniewski. Last year, Dominik Latoń's scientific supervisors, Prof. Dr. Andrzej Ożadowicz and Dr. Jakub Grela, visited inIT and held initial talks about cooperation. This exchange has now led to concrete cooperation.

Prof. Dr. Lukasz Wisniewski is delighted with the successful research visit: ‘The cooperation with AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow has great potential for both sides. We see many points of contact and are already working intensively on further collaborations.’
