FLEXLOC: Flexible Framework for Localization in Industrial Environments

01.05.2025 bis 30.11.2025

The increasing complexity of manufacturing processes and new technologies in industrial environments require solutions to improve safety and efficiency, as well as to enhance the flexibility of production systems. Localization technologies are essential for the dynamic control of production and logistics processes. However, existing systems often reach technical limits in complex industrial environments, are frequently optimized for specific characteristics, and thus have limited flexibility. Furthermore, many applications are technology-specific. Shadowing, reflections, and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) conditions lead to further limitations and hinder the seamless integration of different methods.

Within the FLEXLOC project, these challenges are analyzed to create a solid foundation for a European grant proposal. To this end, concepts for extending the omlox framework are being investigated to achieve higher precision, flexibility, and robustness. This includes the use of mobile anchor points, flexibly installed (e.g., on AGVs), which establish line-of-sight (LOS) connections to tags that would otherwise be blocked, through automatic recalibration. Additionally, AI-based algorithms are intended to analyze radio signals, reliably distinguish between LOS and NLOS signals, and compensate for signal distortions. 5G is planned as an integral part of the extended omlox framework to merge localization and communication. The extension of the omlox system architecture via a 5G Complementary Zone and the integration into existing 5G campus networks are being evaluated.

FLEXLOC serves as a preparatory project to prepare a competitive EU grant proposal by sharpening the project focus, detailing the scientific-technical questions, expanding the consortium, and developing an application strategy. The goal is to create the foundation for a EU project to strengthen European technological leadership and competitiveness in the field of industrial localization.
